WINDFALL Trailer

A robbery goes sideways in Windfall, the latest from director Charlie McDowell.

The robber wasn’t expecting to see his mark. The tech giant and his wife weren’t supposed to visit their vacation home, but a spur-of-the-moment trip puts them in the house while the robber is still rifling for valuables. Instead of slipping away, he takes the couple hostage, determined to get the money he feels he deserves. Except the robber is hampered by more than bad luck. He’s not very good at this, and the tech guy isn’t used to not being in control. The longer their situation continues the more they needle at each other, threatening to overturn the balance of power.

While it seems unlikely they’ll all make it out of this safe, the trailer doesn’t make this out to be the tensest of thrillers. That fits with McDowell’s best-known film, the fantasy romance The One I Love, which used its central mystery less for suspense than for an odd angle into exploring relationships. There are a lot of socioeconomic undertones to Windfall, and one gets the sense that exploring those is the film’s primary reason for existence.

Backing that up is a cast that leans on versatile performers. Jason Segel plays the robber while Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins are the couple who interrupt his plundering. All are capable of playing with the layers on display in this trailer, which makes Windfall an oddity to look forward to.

Windfall is directed by Charlie McDowell and stars Jason Segel, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Collins. It will be released worldwide on Netflix March 18th, 2022.
