WIN IT ALL Trailer

Netflix is snatching up filmmakers left and right, with one of their recent additions being indie standout Joe Swanberg. The prolific writer/director debuted the anthology series Easy with the company just last year and has turned over distribution rights for his latest film, Win It All, to the streaming service turned major industry player.

Swanberg’s brand of improvisational character pieces have found audiences through Netflix before, as films like Drinking Buddies and Happy Christmas make for pleasant finds during a quiet night in. Skipping what would likely be a limited theatrical run allows Win It All to hit its fan base in one pop, consolidating what has historically been steady praise of the filmmaker’s work into one tight window. Maybe this will amplify the praise or maybe it will stay as muted as ever, but the release brings another interesting experiment to Swangberg’s unorthodox style of filmmaking.

The film itself, though, is a familiar mix of elements and players from Swanberg’s previous films, with star Jake Johnson returning for his third feature with the director. Johnson also receives a co-writing credit here, and with his charming persona now very recognizable to audiences thanks to his appearances in the blockbuster Jurassic World and long-running television series New Girl, the film should be an easy sell. Come watch a lovable loser get himself into trouble with a bag full of cash, or more accurately, sit in your home and have the lovable loser come to you.

Win It All is directed by Joe Swanberg and stars Jake Johnson, Keegan-Michael Key, and Aislinn Derbez. It will be released worldwide on Netflix on April 7th, 2017.
