WILSON Trailer

Wilson is the latest adaptation of the works of Daniel Clowes. One of the most famous adaptations of his graphic novels is the 2001 movie Ghost World, which starred Thora Birch, Steve Buscemi and Scarlett Johansson which has gone on to become a bit of a cult classic.

Wilson tells the story of a middle-aged man, played by Woody Harrelson, who is a bit of a misanthrope. He doesn’t respect boundaries and often bothers complete strangers by telling them about his personal problems. Wilson finds out that his ex-wife Pippi, played by Laura Dern, had a daughter he never knew about. He decides to set out on a quest to meet his daughter, who was given up for adoption. The rest of the trailer shows Wilson and Pippi following their daughter Claire, played by Isabella Amara, around, while eventually seemingly making some sort of connection although this is just a trailer so it’s hard to tell how much of the story we’re being shown here.

Wilson looks like a fun R-rated (15 certificate in the U.K.) comedy for a more adult audience than the usual Hollywood fare which is wonderful. Modern comedies tend to have a recurring problem: annoyingly, they have to end with one of the characters having some sort of realization or learning a moralistic lesson. These lessons tend to come off as preachy, unrealistic and contrived. It’s often hilariously parodied in South Park episodes, ending with the kids having learned a lesson. Personally, I don’t believe every comedy has to be appropriate for all ages and with the success of Deadpool, hopefully more studios will take chances on more adult properties such as Wilson.

Wilson is directed by Craig Johnson and stars Woody Harrelson, Laura Dern and Isabella Amara. It will be released in the U.S. on March 24th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.

Do you think the release of R-rated comedies like Deadpool and Wilson will be a lasting trend or are these titles merely a blip on the radar? Let us know in the comments!
