The modern age isn’t kind to prophecies. Science explains most of them away, so if the prediction isn’t wrapped up in one of the dominant, well-supported religions, it’s easy to ignore or even ridicule them.
The former is what happened to the prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman, which has been passed down by Native Americans in the Plains Nations for centuries. Given that American culture has been taken over and dominated by Europeans, widespread ignorance of the prophecy was par for the course, at least until it started coming true.
The birth of a white buffalo in 1994 fulfilled the beginning of the prophecy, which brings with it the possibility of a healed Earth or widespread destruction. Four brothers decided to explore the little-known event, documenting their discoveries in the documentary White Buffalo: An American Prophecy.
The film’s long production is indicative of how much ground the brother’s needed to cover, with the first appearance of the White Buffalo Calf Woman allegedly happening about 2,000 years ago. Delving into the robust oral history that has kept the prophecy alive is no small feat, and the film offers a unique opportunity to learn about a forgotten piece of history, and if you believe the prophecy, our future.
White Buffalo: An American Prophecy is directed by Ethan Marten. Release dates are not currently known. Find the film on Facebook and Twitter.
