WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING Trailer

A small town becomes embroiled in a trial in Where the Crawdads Sing, the latest from director Olivia Newman.

Based on the bestselling book of the same name, the film follows Kya, who is trying to navigate young adulthood without any help. Her family abandoned her years ago, and she survived on her own in the marshes of North Carolina. She’s able to eke out a living with a bit of help from a guy who buys her mussels, but otherwise, she’s a whispered about outcast among the community. That is until she strikes up a romantic relationship with a couple of boys and one ends up dead, putting her in the town’s crosshairs.

With a lot of underlying abuse in this story, this is a dark tale of small-town life. The material should be a decent fit for Newman, who’s been working in television after her debut feature, First Match, touched on similar topics.

The film is led in front of the camera by Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones and co-stars Harris Dickinson, Taylor John Smith, and David Strathairn.

The book was launched onto the bestseller list after being part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club (she is also a producer on the film). Presumably, that means there are lots of movie fans who’re aware of this story and are primed to make the film a hit as well.

Where the Crawdads Sing is directed by Olivia Newman and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harris Dickinson, Taylor John Smith, and David Strathairn. It will be released in the US on July 15th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
