Noah (Adam Devine) and Avery (Alexandra Daddario) met at a Halloween party, but after spending a fun night together Noah ends up getting friendzoned. Three years later, Avery is about to get married when Noah discovers a photobooth that doubles as a time machine. Noah decides to travel back in time to win Avery’s heart. This seems like a good idea at first but Noah is so desperate to win Avery over he tries to rush things along by using things she told him in the future which freaks her out as it makes it seem like he’s a stalker.

When We First Met looks like a fun combination of Back to the Future and 50 First Dates. While Noah’s actions are morally ambiguous at best, they are certainly relatable, who wouldn’t want to travel back in time to right their wrongs? The thing that makes time travel movies interesting is the problem of the possibility of paradoxes and the ripple effect. Everything you change in the past changes things in the future. Even though you may improve your past, your present might be worse off. Considering these facts it’s probably better to try and learn from your mistakes and get on with your life.

When We First Met is directed by Ari Sandel and stars Adam Devine and Alexandra Daddario. It is released through Netflix in the U.K. and U.S. on February 9th, 2018.
