WENDY Trailer

A classic is re-imagined in Wendy, the latest from co-writer and director Benh Zeitlin.

The titular Wendy in this case is Wendy Darling of Peter Pan fame. She’s no Edwardian schoolgirl anymore, though, with Zeitlin trading out the period trappings for an assemblage of modern kids. They still find an island that’s seemingly out of time, and they still must decide whether to grow up or stay as they are. So, the meat of the story is the same, it’s just a different group asked the same, timeless question.

The film is the long-awaited sophomore effort from Zeitlin, who burst onto the scene with the multi-Oscar nominee Beasts of the Southern Wild. That film was released way back in 2012, though, so the excitement of his debut has long since worn off. Still, Wendy seems like such a natural predecessor, with its kids journeying through fantastical but perilous worlds, that interest will likely be reignited.

From the look of the trailer it seems that Zeitlin has stuck to his old ethos, somehow getting enough money to put a rich world on the screen without relying on big names to sell it. In fact, the cast seems to be made up almost entirely of newcomers, with Devin France starring as the titular Wendy and Shay Walker and Tommie Lynn Milazzo also appearing.

The trailer is mostly about moody wonder, probably just as Zeitlin intended, which is hopefully enough to find an audience.

Wendy is directed by Benh Zeitlin and stars Devin France, Shay Walker, and Tommie Lynn Milazzo. It will be released in the US and the UK on February 28th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
