WELCOME TO HAPPINESS Trailer

Who needs neat little boxes? Well, usually first-time filmmakers do, especially the ones pulling writing and directing duties by themselves. Mixing genres leaves you with a messy or nonexistent blueprint to follow, and striking out into this unknown territory is risky even for seasoned veterans. That didn’t stop Oliver Thompson, though, who looks to be swinging for the fences with his debut, Welcome to Happiness.

Quirky fantasy, real-life pain, and a bit of romance collide when a children’s writer becomes too interested in a mysterious door that allows people to change their past. It’s a decidedly indie-feeling piece, but it likely has something up its sleeve if actors like Kyle Gallner, Olivia Thirlby, and Nick Offerman were all drawn to the project. Gallner even serves as a producer for the film, with several of the actors contacting each other to secure the impressive cast. The premise is certainly intriguingly enough, and there’s flashes of some real weight to back it up.

Whether it all ends up gelling together or not, at least Thompson was bold with his first film. Many of us complain about the endless remakes, franchises, and adaptations clogging up our theaters. Well, here’s a guy that’s bucking the trend by showing us some genuine imagination. No wonder people are eager to support it.

Welcome to Happiness is directed by Oliver Thompson and stars Kyle Gallner, Olivia Thirlby, and Nick Offerman. It will be released in the U.S. in theaters and VOD on May 20th, 2016. Further release dates are not currently known.
