A family is stuck in the bathroom in We Need to Do Something, the narrative feature debut of director Sean King O’Grady.
Based on the novella of the same name by Max Booth III (who handled the adaptation himself), the film sees an unhappy behind the white picket fence family huddle in their bathroom while a tornado passes. Luckily, it’s a rather spacious bathroom. Unluckily, they get stuck in there for much longer than expected. At first, they think a tree has fallen in front of the door, but as unexplainable events pile up, it becomes clear that more than a storm has befallen them.
It’s a horror movie, yes, but with the enclosed setting and few people to be slaughtered, expect this to spend plenty of time on the family breaking down. Finding the right pace for such a movie is tough, and O’Grady, who primarily works on documentaries, hasn’t exactly proven that he can handle such a tricky subgenre.
Who has proven themselves is Pat Healy and Vinessa Shaw as the mother and father, who will likely have the most pent-up anguish to work through. Not far behind them will be their teenage daughter played by Sierra McCormick, while John James Cronin as the young son will be dodging all the angst.
Things are sure to get out of hand once whatever’s actually going on is revealed, but expect this to mostly be about the horror of a family in a breakdown.
We Need to Do Something is directed by Sean King O’Grady and stars Sierra McCormick, Pat Healy, and Vinessa Shaw. It will be released in the US on September 3rd, 2021. Further release dates are not currently known.
