VOX LUX Trailer

Natalie Portman is consumed by the pop star machine in Vox Lux, the latest from actor-turned-director Brady Corbet.

The film tracks her character’s life for almost 20 years, beginning with her entering the public eye after a school shooting and following her through the ups and downs of the ensuing decades. People of a certain age will immediately recognize the metaphor here, with the film representing something experienced vaguely by every generation but that had sharp, defining moments for my own. Privileged American kids growing up in the ’90s were told the world was our oyster, then the late ’90s and early 2000s brought our possibilities to their knees. As my history teacher told my fellow 13-year-olds on September 11th, 2001, that day would shape the rest of our lives.

Vox Lux is the second writing and directing effort for Brady Corbet, who is trying to avoid a slump after the success of The Childhood of a Leader. He didn’t play it safe with this film, which looks to turn the outrageous level up to eleven. Good on him.

The time span of the film means Portman isn’t the only one playing our bigger than life lead, with Raffey Cassidy taking on the younger version of the character. The cast is rounded out by big names like Jude LawWillem Dafoe, and Jennifer Ehle, who will hopefully help ground this strange tale.

Vox Lux is directed by Brady Corbet and stars Natalie PortmanJennifer Ehle, and Jude Law. It will be released in the US on December 7th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
