Adam McKay attempts to distill another complicated moment in history with Vice, which takes a look at how Dick Cheney became one of the most powerful US Vice Presidents ever.
The film tracks Cheney from a young man to present day, covering all the memorable moments from his days as an intern to that time he shot a guy in the face. It is, to be clear, an unabashedly slanted take on his legacy, but what else do you expect from the guy who brought you The Big Short? You think he’s going to take it easy on a deeply entrenched Republic who helped launch America into the war in Afghanistan?
Director Adam McKay really changed up his image with The Big Short, having previously worked on several Will Ferrell comedies like Step Brothers and Anchorman 2. Many assumed doing a funny but informative take on the housing market collapse was well outside of his abilities, but he proved the naysayers wrong. He’ll be facing higher expectations for Vice because of it, and while he has more events to cover with this story, he should at least have less technical jargon to explain.
His connections and esteem also means Vice was able to draw a top-notch cast, with Christian Bale donning some heavy makeup to play Dick Cheney. Amy Adams, Alison Pill, and Lily Rabe round out the rest of his family with Sam Rockwell and Steve Carell taking on George W. Bush and Donald Rumsfeld, respectively.
Vice is one of the last big movies of the year to be released, and with no festival showings ahead of time, it’s either being held to blow everyone away or to hide that it’s a misfire. Hopefully it turns out to be the former.
Vice is directed by Adam McKay and stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Steve Carell. It will be released in the US on December 25th, 2018 and in the UK on January 25th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
