VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE Trailer

Everyone’s favorite chaos-inducing symbiote is back in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the sequel to the 2018 mega-hit Venom.

Eddie Brock is still the host to an alien symbiote with a proclivity for eating humans, but they’ve struck an uneasy truce. That’s allowed his life to approach normalcy, so he’s decided to get back to his old job as an investigative reporter. Eddie’s first interview is with convicted serial killer Cletus Kasady, who turns out to have more in common with Eddie than he expected. Turns out Cletus has a symbiote of his own, and it helps him escape from prison and unleash carnage.

The mixed success of the series’ first entry virtually guaranteed a sequel, meaning that it succeeded in the right place (it made tons of money) and failed where the studio could ignore (critics hated it, but not yours truly). The conflicting takes were because the movie was a juvenile, garish mess, and you were either taken by that energy or you weren’t. By all accounts, they seem to be trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle, which will be a tough task for director Andy Serkis. The good news is he’s a maestro at special effects, which this movie is sure to be inundated with. He just might be the right person for the job.

Returning in all his glory is Tom Hardy, who gave such a bold performance as Eddie Brock last time around that it’s hard to imagine he’ll be able to top it. Joining him as the new baddie Cletus is a man equally capable of going big, Woody Harrelson. Lots of other familiar faces will be bouncing around them, but the joy will come from those two trying desperately to live with their symbiotes, if this movie can recapture the zaniness.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is directed by Andy Serkis and stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Woody Harrelson. It will be released in the UK on September 15th, 2021, and in the US on September 24th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
