UMMA Trailer

The past catches up to a mother and daughter in Umma, the latest from writer/director Iris K. Shim.

Amanda has created a quiet life for her daughter on a rural plot of land far from the bustle of modern life, where the two are beekeepers with a small but thriving business. Friends are few and connection to the outside is limited, but it works for them, even if the daughter has grown up enough to spread her wings. Then a stranger appears bearing what Amanda never wanted: the remains of her mother and the curse that comes with them.

The big appeal here is Sandra Oh, who is the big appeal in everything she does thanks to a long career of varied, impressive work. We haven’t seen her do much horror, though, and as the mother whose manicured life comes undone, we’ll get to see a different side to her.

Also new to the genre is Shim, who’s done shorts and a documentary before but never a feature-length horror film. Her doc, The House of Suh, did delve into a shocking family murder, though, so thematic parallels are there.

Co-starring in the film is Fivel Stewart, Dermot Mulroney, and Odeya Rush.

Umma is directed by Iris K. Shim and stars Sandra Oh, Fivel Stewart, and Dermot Mulroney. It will be released in the US on March 18th and in the UK on March 25th. For international release dates, click here.
