TRIPLE FRONTIER Trailer

Netflix is kicking up the action with Triple Frontier, a star-studded heist film that shows no indication of being restricted by the streaming service.
Conceived and co-written by Mark Boal, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the movie is filled with unrecognized, dutiful men. The group planing the heist are US military veterans, highly trained people with little to show for their work. While trying to squeak out a living back home they catch wind of a large stash of drug money in a border area of South America, which gives them a prime opportunity to use their skills for a big payday. It’s risky, of course, but they’ve risked all before. They just have to decide whether they’ll risk it all for themselves alone.
This combination of social commentary and taut action is what Boal does, having made his name writing films like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty. Coming up with a film like this almost seems inevitability for him, but it’s a change of pace for director and co-writer J.C. Chandor. Sure, his previous movie, A Most Violent Year, was a crime film, but it was heavier on intrigue than action. His other films were similarly thrilling but actionless, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the big set pieces.
The group of vets are played by an impressive lineup of burly men: Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal, Oscar Isaac, and Garret Hedlund. That’s an extremely flashy cast for a Netflix film, who stepped in as distributor when Paramount dropped the project just weeks before filming was set to begin. That all of them signed on for a film destined for a limited theatrical run is a sign of the times, but at least we’re finally getting this promising action film.
Triple Frontier is directed by J.C. Chandor and stars Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, and Charlie Hunnam. It will be released worldwide in March 2019.
