An ’80s classic takes flight again in Top Gun: Maverick, the latest from director Joseph Kosinski.
In the ensuing 30+ years, most of the daredevil pilots from the first film have moved on to other roles in the Navy. But not Maverick. Determined to keep his head in the clouds, he’s remained a pilot and now is being utilized for his experience as much as his skill. He’s tasked with preparing a group of young guns for a dangerous mission, and while his past earns him some respect, it also brings about doubts that stops the team from buying into his essential training.
With more top-flight action and lots of key interpersonal relationships, this looks to follow right in its predecessor’s footsteps. Kosinski is a good man to carry the torch, having helmed robust action films like Only the Brave and Oblivion.
But let’s be real, everyone’s most excited to see Tom Cruise back in the c*ckpit. As one of the last remaining movie stars, he’s fine going back to familiar roles and familiar styles, namely keeping high octane, minimum CGI stunts on the big screen. He’ll have lots of opportunities to show off these trademarks in Maverick, where he’s joined by Val Kilmer reprising his role as Iceman and series newcomers Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm.
Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, and Jennifer Connelly. It will be released in the US and the UK on May 27th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
