TOP GUN: MAVERICK Trailer

After years of speculation about a possible sequel, Tom Cruise showed up at San Diego Comic Con 2019 to show the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick. Although a possible sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun had been talked about for years, it seemed like it would never happen due to Cruise‘s involvement with the Mission: Impossible franchise and various other projects.

Top Gun: Maverick picks up 34 years after the events of the original film with Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) coaching young pilots at the Top Gun flight academy. One of the young pilots is Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller) the son of his former co-pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards).

Judging from the first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, this film will be a trip down memory lane. The trailer shows us more of the stunning aerial sequences we saw in the first film, as well as glimpses of another volleyball game, a bar singing session and Tom Cruise driving his motorcycle near the base.

In the trailer, Maverick is confronted by one of his superiors, played by Ed Harris, about the fact he’s never managed to advance his position within the naval hierarchy due to his lack of tact. Given the modern age of military aviation, one of the themes of the film will likely be the growing dependency on drones to carry out combat missions. It’ll be interesting to see how Maverick fares in a world that increasingly values drones over human pilots.

Top Gun: Maverick is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Tom Cruise, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller with Tom Skeritt and Val Kilmer. It will be released on July 17th, 2020 in the U.K. and June 26th, 2020 in the U.S. For international release dates click here.
