Tomb Raider is an upcoming live action film based on the popular ’90s video game series of the same name. The film will be the first live action version since the two films that came out in the early ’00s which starred Angelina Jolie. This time around recent Oscar winner Alicia Vikander will take on the Lara Croft role. For those that might not be familiar with the game, or the previous two films, Lara Croft is an archaeologist/adventurer in the mould of Indiana Jones. It will be interesting to see what Alicia Vikander brings to the role.

Last year saw the release of two films based on popular video games in the form of Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft: The Beginning, neither of which managed to live up to expectations although Warcraft managed to make money through its popularity in Asian markets, China in particular. Video games have proven notoriously difficult to adapt for the screen regardless of the talent involved, many of the films in the genre have failed to make money. It will be interesting to see whether the new Tomb Raider will manage to buck the trend, especially considering the first two films did well but not great.

Tomb Raider is directed by Roar Uthaug and stars Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and others. It will be simultaneously released in the U.S. and the U.K. on March 16th, 2018. For international release dates click here.
