TOLKIEN Trailer

After many film adaptions of his work, the life of J.R.R. Tolkien himself is coming to the big screen in Tolkien.

You may have heard about a little series called The Lord of the Rings (or maybe you were more of a Hobbit fan), but one way or another you’ve almost certainly encountered Tolkien’s creations. His imagined Middle Earth became a cultural phenomenon thanks to Peter Jackson‘s films, but many people don’t know the trauma that caused Tolkien to create these epic battles between right and wrong. World War I and other hardships shaped his worldview, and in turn they are infused into his writing. Tolkien looks to connect those dots for viewers, hopefully enriching the stories you already love.

Director Dome Karukoski makes the jump to English-language films with this project, buoyed by a string of successful Finnish movies. His last, Tom of Finland, was even nominated for an Oscar, so it seems the project was put in good hands.

Starring as the titular writer is Nicholas Hoult, who’s been circling just under stardom since his days as the little tot in About a Boy. This is a more serious project for him, and if all goes well it could mark a turn towards more prominent roles. Co-starring is Lily Collins, who will have to sort out playing his love interest/inspiration without making the role feel flat.

The title isn’t lying to you, though; this is all about Tolkien himself, so hopefully the creator is as interesting as his creations.

Tolkien is directed by Dome Karukoski and stars Nicholas HoultLily Collins, and Colm Meaney. It will be released in the US on May 3rd, 2019 and in the UK on May 10th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
