TITANE Trailer

It’s cars, sex, and thrills in the Palme d’Or winning Titane, the latest from writer/director Julia Ducournau.

The trailer works pretty hard to keep what’s going on shrouded, so I’ll follow its lead and not expand upon the plot. Apparently, there’s a young woman, very sexualized car dancing, an intimidating-looking procedure on a child, and an older man who likes to dance sans cars. So, I’m going to guess it’s a light rom-com frolic.

Come on, we’re all here because of Ducournau, who burst onto the scene with the coming-of-age, deliciously gory horror film Raw. That brazen, playful, and thematically rich debut took the arthouse horror world by storm, so Titane, with its heady and upsetting trailer, will likely be along much the same line.

Hence it’s only a mild surprise that Ducournau became just the second woman to win the Palme d’Or (the other is Jane Campion for The Piano, a sign of the deep-seeded sexism in the arthouse scene and the industry at large). Campion had to deliver an operatic masterpiece to win, and frankly, that’s exactly the kind of film Ducournau seems to make (but with much more blood).

Newcomer Agathe Rousselle stars as the car-writhing young woman alongside Vincent Lindon as the glimpsed-upon older man. But honestly, it looks like wild style will be carrying Ducournau’s film yet again, so just make sure you put on your seatbelt for the ride.

Titane is directed by Julia Ducournau and stars Agathe Rousselle and Vincent Lindon. It will be released in the US on October 1st, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
