It takes time to find your voice in tick, tick…Boom!, the latest from director Lin-Manuel Miranda.
You may have heard of Jonathan Larson, who wrote the autobiographical musical on which this is based. He created the hit musical Rent, but this story is about his time before that success. Throughout his 20s he was just another anonymous artist working a day job at a diner and using whatever free time he had to tinker away at his art. With his youth slipping away and success seemingly far off, he begins to wonder whether he will ever make it.
Larson created the piece back in the ’90s, and it has undergone a number of revisions and expansions since, often by other creators after Larson’s death in 1996. The looseness of its history makes it a prime candidate for a film adaptation, which is being handled by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. He actually directed a largely forgotten hour-long film called Clayton’s Friends in the ’90s, but this will be a whole different bear.
Starring as Jon is film vet Andrew Garfield, and co-stars include a mix of film and musical theaters actors like Alexandra Shipp and Robin De Jesús.
It’s an eclectic group trying to adapt a musical that’s taken on many forms throughout the decades, which will hopefully free them up to make one of the better film musicals as the industry apparent returns to the form.
tick, tick…Boom! is directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and stars Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, and Robin De Jesús. It will have a limited theatrical release in the US starting November 12th before releasing worldwide on Netflix on November 19th.
