Female friendship takes a dark turn in Thoroughbreds, a genre bender that was a hit at last year’s Sundance Film Festival but is just now getting a theatrical release.
It’s a familiar position for both of its leads, as Anya Taylor-Joy had the release of her breakout, The Witch, held up for nearly a year while Olivia Cooke saw the delay and death of Sundance winner Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Frankly, the stalled release doesn’t bode well for the film’s box office, but that doesn’t mean the movie itself is destined to be a dud.
It could very well be that no one could figure out how to market this thing, which from its trailer could be anything from a humorous crime story to a scathing social critique. It’s probably a little bit of both and a lot more, which makes it an excited, if enigmatic, little film.
The reviews we have from Sundance and its other festival showings are outright glowing, and if the film can live up to that hype, it could make for one of the early finds of 2018. The film marks writer/director Cory Finley’s debut and, unfortunately, Anton Yelchin’s last role. Even more reason to hope this thing turns out well.
Thoroughbreds is directed by Cory Finley and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Olivia Cooke, and Anton Yelchin. It will be released in the U.S. on March 9th, 2018 and in the U.K. on April 6th, 2018. For further release dates, click here.
