THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Trailer

Thor tries to take a gap year in Thor: Love and Thunder, the latest from director Taika Waititi.

With the weight of his world, our world, and being a god on his shoulders, Thor hasn’t had much time to figure himself out. Catastrophic events have slowed down and other heroes have stepped up, though, so Thor decides to take a break to travel, explore his interests, and find what makes him happy. That’s the bulk of this trailer, but we know that his me time gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, and in combatting this new foe his old flame reappears in a new role.

Thor has become the goofiest of the Avengers, partially because Chris Hemsworth is very good at playing a himbo and partially because Waititi has taken the reigns of his solo films. The character’s first two movies have long been considered among the worst in the MCU, but Waititi turned all that around with the bright, campy Ragnarok, and he seems to be keeping this tone for Love and Thunder.

Hemsworth, or course, is back as the titular god, as is Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Waititi as the voice of Kong, and much of the Guardians crew. The new baddie, Gorr, sees Christian Bale join the MCU, but the big casting news is the return of Natalie Portman as Thor’s ex Jane Foster. Portman hasn’t appeared in the MCU since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, a conspicuous absence given her name recognition and the MCU’s penchant for keeping people around. But she’s back in a big way here, wielding Mjolnir and apparently leveling up to a superhero herself. It’s an eyebrow-raising development, one that signals that Love and Thunder will have serious ramifications for the MCU has a whole.

Thor: Love and Thunder is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale. It will be released in the US and the UK on July 8th. International release can be found here.
