THEY/THEM Trailer

A conversion camp gets bloody in They/Them, the latest from writer/director John Logan.

Off the top, I want to specify that you pronounce the “/” in the title. It’s an indicator of a less than serious tone, which is backed up by this trailer for the horror film that has been stirring up conversation ever since its announcement. I get it: is now the time for a horror film set at a conversion camp? There’s increasing aggression towards LGBTQ+ people around the world, putting many hard-fought rights in jeopardy, and we’re supposed to go enjoy an indulgent slasher film about it?

Well, yes, many would argue, because that’s how lots of people process things. If it’s not for you, cool, but there’s one pretty big reason to have hope this will nail its tricky material: John Logan. The name likely won’t stick out to you unless, like me, you are a diehard Penny Dreadful fan. Logan created and wrote the gothic horror series that spun various literary figures around the captivating work Eva Green, meaning it’s a very particular series that happened to get everything just right. Logan will need to do the same if he wants They/Them to stay in inoffensive territory, but hey, he’s done it before.

Kevin Bacon and Anna Chlumsky take top billing as two of the leaders of the conversion camp, but I’m guessing we’ll be rooting for the teens played by Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Austin Crute, Monique Kim, Anna Lore, Cooper Koch, and Darwin del Fabro. If not, then this thing will for sure go off the rails.

They/Them is directed by John Logan and stars Kevin Bacon, Anna Chlumsky, and Theo Germaine. It will be released in the US on Peac*ck on August 5th. Further release dates are not currently known.
