A father must stop his sins from landing on his son in There Are No Saints, the latest from director Alfonso Pineda Ulloa.
The son had a lot of time to imagine his father while the latter was in prison. That he came up with someone impossibly good is no surprise given his father’s nickname is “the Jesuit”, but this idea of him is far from reality. When he’s released his shady life catches up to both of them, with the man’s wife murdered and his son kidnapped by old enemies. A saint wouldn’t do what the man does next: unleash hell in order to save his son.
An aging, ragged anti-hero is a familiar archetype in cinema, but it’s especially familiar in the films of Paul Schrader. The writer of Taxi Driver and director of First Reformed (among many other legendary credits) knows what he’s good at and seems to be playing the hits with this script. He also recognized that he shouldn’t be the only voice for this Mexico-set chase and so journeyman TV and film director Ulloa helms the project.
Starring as the troubled father is José María Yazpik with Ron Perlman, Neal McDonough, and Paz Vega co-starring.
With Schrader on a hot streak, it’ll be hard to ignore this rampage through past sins.
