THE WONDER Trailer

An impossibility occurs in The Wonder, the latest from co-writer/director Sebastián Lelio.

Everyone knows Anna can’t be doing what she claims. She says that she hasn’t eaten in months, and the small miracle is beginning to attract the faithful who think Anna is being sustained by God. To disprove the phenomenon, watchers are brought in to observe her around the clock, one of whom is an outsider to the small Irish village. Skeptically, she watches the girl, and as their time together extends a strange bond forms.

Based on the book of the same name by Emma Donoghue, the material seems right up Lelio’s alley. He dove deep into the inner world of women with Gloria Bell, Disobedience, and A Fantastic Woman, and The Wonder gives him another opportunity to do just that.

The intense focus will put a lot of weight on Florence Pugh’s performance as the watcher, and that’s a selling point given the amazing work she’s been doing. Co-starring with her are Kíla Lord Cassidy, Tom Burke, and Niamh Algar.

Unsurprisingly given the team behind it, The Wonder has accumulated plenty of acclaim during its festival run. At the very least it should be worth seeing Pugh going under Lelio’s microscope, a place greats like Julianne Moore, Rachel Weisz, and Rachel McAdams have already thrived.

The Wonder is directed by Sebastián Lelio and stars Florence Pugh, Kíla Lord Cassidy, and Tom Burke. It will be released on Netflix worldwide on November 16th.
