A woman tries to find her way in a world that doesn’t want her in The Unforgivable, the latest from director Nora Fingscheidt.
Ruth is going through the difficult ordeal of putting her life back together after 20 years in prison. The usual systemic barriers are hard enough to overcome, but she was in for a particularly heinous crime, one that no one seems ready to forget. What she clings to is a chance to see her sister again, who was adopted after Ruth was arrested and had a whole different set of opportunities than her. Others wonder if reconnecting would be good for anyone but Ruth, but Ruth is determined to see her sister again.
If the premise sounds like a nondescript redemption drama, take heart that the film is based on the award-winning miniseries Unforgiven and attracted the acclaimed Fingscheidt to direct. Fingscheidt is coming off the German critical darling System Crasher, so it’s possible this could be a much deeper story than its outline lets on.
Then, of course, there’s the Sandra Bullock of it all. Playing Ruth will be one of her more serious turns, but she’s proven versatile when given the opportunity. Co-starring with her is a stellar cast that includes Jon Bernthal, Vincent D’Onofrio, Viola Davis, and Aisling Franciosi.
With a worldwide release on Netflix, we’ll all get to see how this film turns out. Hopefully, it surprises us.
