THE SOUVENIR PART II Trailer

The student graduates in The Souvenir: Part II, the latest from writer/director Joanna Hogg.

Still reeling from the death of her boyfriend in The Souvenir, Julie must get it together enough to shoot her final student film. Instead of putting her complicated memories of him aside (he had a nasty drug addiction and was prone to manipulation), she weaves her grief into her project, attempting to untangle the man she loved from all the things he kept hidden from her.

Hogg had made several well-received films before 2019’s The Souvenir, but that semi-autobiographical look at a young woman making her way through film school and diving deep into a troubled relationship put her on the map. Rave reviews didn’t exactly translate into financial success, but the methodical dive into the life of a fledgling creative was never going to set the box office on fire. Acclaim, though, was enough to earn her a sequel.

Also returning is Honor Swinton Byrne. Julie remains her only major film role, but her turn is considered such a knockout that it’s bound to lead to more work from the young star. Doesn’t hurt that she’s the daughter of acting royal Tilda Swinton, who also returns in the meta role of Julie’s mother.

Fans of the 2019 film will rejoice at the chance to return to such a unique world, and the fact that it’s somehow receiving even more acclaim than its lauded predecessor should only amplify their excitement.

The Souvenir: Part II is directed by Joanna Hogg and stars Honor Swinton Byrne, Jaygann Ayeh, Richard Ayoade, and Tilda Swinton. It will be released in the US on October 29th, 2021 and in the UK on January 21st, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
