Love blossoms, literally, in The Sky is Everywhere, the latest from director Josephine Decker.
This is a turn towards the light and whimsical for Decker, who broke out with the troubled teen dancer film Madeline’s Madeline and followed it up with the suffocating take on horror writer Shirley Jackson in Shirley. Those are nothing like the teen romance she’s doing here, even if it does have a harder edge.
Based on the novel of the same name, The Sky is Everywhere follows Lennie, a high schooler who loves band and her big sister. When her sister dies suddenly, she’s set adrift during one of the most tumultuous times of her life, having to sort out her grief and two burgeoning loves all on her own.
Aptly, this film is coming out on Valentine’s Day, and it looks like Decker will be giving all the feels people want for the holiday. The material may be lighter, but her heavy style is still present, which is sure to bring the roiling emotions in Lennie to the fore.
Man with a Plan star Grace Kaufman jumps from TV to film here as Lennie, giving her the big task of handling all those emotions. Co-starring with her are Jacques Colimon and Pico Alexander as her love interests and Jason Segel and Cherry Jones as her fellow grieving family members.
So if you’re looking to really soak in emotions for Valentine’s Day, you might want to check this one out.
