A community tries to solve a horrifying mystery in The Ravine, the latest from writer/director Keoni Waxman.

Based on a bestselling novel, the film follows a couple trying to make sense of their friend’s sudden murder/suicide. Nothing had indicated to them that anything was wrong with their neighbors, so when the mother and one of the son’s bodies are found in the home and the fathers’ at the bottom of a ravine, they suspect there’s more to the story than meets the eye. In the course of their amateur investigation, they are forced to confront how this affects their own perspectives on humanity and faith.

This trailer plays down the faith aspect of this film, but all other promo makes it very clear that the film takes a turn away from the criminal investigation and into a more personal one. It’s an odd thing to de-emphasize, and it makes me wonder how much is really in the movie, especially considering that Waxman is primarily known for gritty, straightforward action thrillers.

Whatever direction the film ends up going in, it’s got a solid anchor in front of the camera in Eric Dane, who plays the former friend/lead amateur investigator. Co-starring with him are Teri Polo, Peter Facinelli, and Byron Mann.

The mystery as to what this film will end up being fits with the tone it’s trying to sell, so maybe the subterfuge was intentional? We’ll find out when the movie releases.

The Ravine is directed by Keoni Waxman and stars Eric Dane, Teri Polo, and Peter Facinelli. It will be released in the US on May 6th, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
