THE PROM Trailer

Broadway comes to Indiana in The Prom, the latest from director Ryan Murphy.

Based on the Tony-nominated musical of the same name, it’s ostensibly about two queer girls who just want to go to prom together. Problem is that the PTA in their small Indiana town has banned them from doing so, and when some no longer popular Broadway performers hear of the injustice, they smell a great PR opportunity. Descending on the town with all the subtlety of, well, a Broadway show, the stars must tame their worst instincts to give the girls the prom they deserve.

The show was a hit with critics if not with audiences (it didn’t turn a profit), but Murphy is combatting that by upping the pizazz. He’s basically entirely recast it, with huge names like Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, James Corden, and an in real life Tony-less Meryl Streep making up the adults battling it out. Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana DeBose play the girls caught in the middle.

Not that getting big names is unusual for Murphy, but by moving back to features after having a hand in five million hit TV shows, one has the feeling he could’ve gotten whoever he wanted. And why wouldn’t they sign on? It’s a big, flashy musical that promises lots of jokes and heart. Who doesn’t want to see that?

(Kind of this gay Hoosier, but that’s mostly because I wish people didn’t think my state was homophobic. But also, we kind of deserve it. Thanks, Mike Pence!)

The Prom is directed by Ryan Murphy and stars everyone, but mostly Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Keegan-Michael Key, Meryl Streep, Jo Ellen Pellman, and Ariana DeBose. It will be released on Netflix worldwide on December 11th, 2020.
