Love is a tough thing to figure out, especially when you haven’t had the best examples. That’s the barrier in The Photograph, the latest from writer/director Stella Meghie.
People adored Mae’s late mother, or at least they adored her world-renowned photographs. Her mother wasn’t as accomplished in her personal life, though, having struggled to maintain long-term relationships, including with her daughter. That’s why Mae’s not a huge help to Michael, a journalist doing a story on her photographer mother. Luckily, their meeting isn’t a complete wash. Sparks fly between the two, presenting an opportunity for something much more important than an article if Mae can overcome her life-long uncertainty about love.

This promises to be a sweet romance, one where there’s relatable insecurities instead of bad guys. It should be comfortably in Meghie’s wheelhouse, having handled the teen romance Everything, Everything and the relationship comedy The Weekend.
What will likely push this to mainstream success is the two red-hot leads, Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield. I mean, who doesn’t want to see them fall in love? If that’s not enough for you, then rest assured that the support cast is just as strong, with Chelsea Peretti, Lil Rel Howery, and Courtney B. Vance all appearing.
With a Valentine’s Day release stateside, it’s hard to imagine this flopping, but will people fall in love with it?
