The modern world catches up to an ancient team in The Old Guard, the latest from director Gina Prince-Bythewood.
There’s always been evil people that need taking care of, and being immortal sure helps get the job done. That’s been the function of a group of centuries-old mercenaries for some time now, but to protect themselves they’ve had to keep their existence a secret. They’d probably become lab rats if they didn’t, and being mercenaries is a hell of a lot more fun. Today’s world of constant video monitoring has made that secret harder to keep, though, where even the slightest mistake could put them all in jeopardy.
This is Netflix’s latest attempt to get into the comic book adaptation game, taking the comic of the same name and turning it over to Prince-Bythewood to make into an action spectacular. While she hasn’t done anything in this genre before, she’s a proven populist filmmaker with movies like Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights. It would be weird that she hasn’t led a blockbuster yet if the reason wasn’t so obvious (no one hired women of color for big-budget films until a few years ago), and while this gig for Netflix isn’t exactly a blockbuster, it’s a project with a lot of money behind it.
I mean, look at this cast: Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Harry Melling, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all star, and with all those recognizable faces and a bunch of slick action to tease, this is almost bound to be a hit for Netflix.
The Old Guard is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and stars Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, and Matthias Schoenaerts. It will be released on Netflix worldwide on July 10th, 2020.
