THE NORTHMAN Trailer

An ancient quest for revenge plays out in The Northman, the latest from co-writer/director Robert Eggers.

Way back in the days of the Vikings, kingdoms were unstable things. If your father was a ruler you could have your birthright taken away by an act of brutality, which is exactly what happened to young Amleth. He saw his father murdered by his uncle when he was just a boy, and he fled into exile to survive. Now a man, he returns home to make good on his vow to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill his uncle.

This looks like another lush, bloody historical piece from Eggers, who made his name with the period horror film The Witch and then got really bizarre with farting madmen in The Lighthouse. This appears to be a more straightforward story than either of those two (avenging your father is as old as stories get), but there are flashes of strange goings-on that is sure to spice things up.

Casting, though, is not the film’s most creative element, but who can blame them for acquiescing to the obvious? Of course, Alexander Skarsgård is the avenging Norseman, and of course, if you can surround him with the likes of Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke, and Claes Bang you’re going to do it. Now you do get a little Björk, as a treat.

All these great actors signed up for The Northman because Eggers is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. You know that. I know that. I don’t think I need to pitch this any further.

The Northman is directed by Robert Eggers and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Willem Dafoe. It will be released in the US and the UK on April 22nd, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
