THE MIDNIGHT SKY Trailer

It’s a scramble to save the remainder of humanity in The Midnight Sky, the latest from director George Clooney.

After some unspecified disaster, Augustine is stuck at a remote base, seemingly alone except for a young child. Whether there are any more humans left on Earth is unclear, but there’s definitely a small group left in space. They’re set to land soon, and Augustine is trying desperately to alert them to the danger on the ground. The problem is his base isn’t powerful enough to reach them, so in a last-ditch attempt, Augustine sets out across the barren environment for a setup with a larger antenna.

On the one hand, this is pure science fiction, an area Clooney isn’t too familiar with as a director. He generally leads either political films or throwaway comedies, things that are far away from the post-apocalypse setup of Midnight Sky. But while this does promise some survival thrills, the tone of this trailer is decidedly more thoughtful, as if the quiet will give the remaining humans plenty of time to contemplate.

Whatever Clooney sees in this he clearly is bought in, as he stars as Augustine in addition to directing. And since no one turns down Clooney, he’s got a hell of a cast alongside him in Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, and Kyle Chandler.

With a clearly substantial budget and plenty of stars, this looks to be a striking (if very serious) holiday season offering from Netflix.

The Midnight Sky is directed by George Clooney and stars Clooney, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, and Kyle Chandler. It will be released in select theaters in the US in December and everywhere on Netflix on December 23rd, 2020.
