Choose your pill once again in The Matrix Resurrections, the latest from co-writer/director Lana Wachowski.
The potent, heady pop culture phenomenon about humanity living in a computer simulation only got more relevant as the technological revolution overwhelmed us. Having lived through it, it’s easy to overlook how fundamentally the world changed in the last twenty years, which the Wachowskis’ anticipated and blended with old and new philosophical and science fiction concepts to create their iconic, leather-clad world. So of course we return to our imagined hero, Neo, to see if there’s anything left to save in a world controlled by machines.
What will actually happen in the fourth installment of the movie franchise has been kept under tight wraps, but it appears Keanu Reeves’ Neo is back in the Matrix and unaware of his past, needing to be reawakened by a Morpheus-like character played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and the blue-haired cool of Jessica Henwick. Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity is in the same boat, which also carries a rubber duckie, because why not.
The joy of The Matrix franchise comes from being surprised and awed (and putting on a leather jacket and jumping around like you’re dodging bullets), so I think we can all wait a few more months to see what Lana has cooked up for us. Yes, just Lana, as for the first time she’s making a movie without her sister, Lilly. There’s no big drama behind this; reportedly Lilly just wasn’t interested in going back to their story. Now you get to make the same choice: do you want to go down the rabbit hole again?
The Matrix Resurrections is directed by Lana Wachowski and stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jessica Henwick. It will be released in the US in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22nd, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
