THE LOVERS Trailer

The Lovers flips the divorce narrative on its head in an overdue take on modern relationships.
Americans have seen divorce and marriage rates change rapidly over the last few decades, and with a generation of adults now viewing familial upheaval as a fairly normal part of life, it’s hard to take traditional stories of divorce or happily ever after very seriously. Such cut and dry relationship patterns aren’t what people experience anymore, which makes the messy situation promised in this trailer all the more appealing.
Yes, it looks to fall squarely in the romantic comedy genre, but with four lovers involved, there should be plenty of extra fireworks. The film also provides a showcase for the ever-reliable Debra Winger, Tracy Letts, Aidan Gillen, and Melora Walters, who play the foursome jockeying for position in each others lives.
The film is the second to be fully financed by A24, which has blossomed into a powerful force after years of distributing top-notch movies. The first film they fully financed was Moonlight, which won Best Picture at the Oscars and was widely regarded as one of the groundbreaking films of 2016. The Lovers seems unlikely to gain that level of praise, but it’s pushing the boundaries in its own way, promising an adult rom-com that doesn’t shortchange romance after a certain age.
The Lovers is directed by Azazel Jacobs and stars Debra Winger and Tracy Letts. It will be released in the U.S. on May 5th, 2017. Further release dates are not currently known.
