THE LOVEBIRDS Trailer

A romantic outing goes hilariously awry in The Lovebirds, the latest from writer/director Michael Showalter.

Jibran and Leilani were innocently going about their lives when a bicyclist crashed into their car and abruptly fled. The confusion that followed seemed to be cleared up when a man claiming to be a police officer requisitioned their vehicle and took chase, but this isn’t a movie (ok, it is a movie, but bear with me), so of course it wasn’t an actual police officer. Suddenly embroiled in a shady underground world, the two must bumble their way through the madness to clear their names.

It’s a pretty good setup for a series of hijinks, which should fit Showalter’s sensibilities. He’s got the affable Hello, My Name Is Doris and The Big Sick under his belt, so he’s proven he can handle a complicated story and a bit of weirdness without shortchanging big laughs.

But really, this looks to be a showcase for the two leads, Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. Their well-documented comedy chops means this movie will be in safe hands in front of the camera as long as their chemistry is solid.

I know this sort of broad comedy makes some people wary, but this has the pieces to be very, very funny.

The Lovebirds is directed by Michael Showalter and stars Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. It will be released in the US on April 3rd, 2020 and in the UK on April 24th, 2020. For further release dates, click here.
