THE LAST DUEL Trailer

A despicable act throws France into turmoil in The Last Duel, the latest from director Ridley Scott.

Based on real events, the movie explores the battle to the death between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris in the last sanctioned judicial duel in France. The accusation that brought this about was from Carrouges’s wife, Marguerite, who steadfastly claimed that Le Gris raped her. Since neither side wavered, the duel between the men threatened to overshadow the damage done to Marguerite, whose life was also on the line if Le Gris won and “proved” his innocence.

With Scott at the helm, this is likely to be an approachable take on the old-school tale, much like his films Exodus: Gods and Kings and Kingdom of Heaven. Unfortunately, these don’t tend to be Ridley’s more beloved movies (they can’t all be Alien), and they can prioritize spectacle over-treating these stories with the accuracy they deserve.

The good news is that he got Killing Eve star Jodie Comer to play Marguerite, so hopefully, she won’t get lost in the manly fight for pride. Jean and Jacques are being played by Matt Damon and Adam Driver, respectively, two guys who can definitely keep up with Comer (unless she seduces them into a storefront tryst, then they’re dead).

Whoever The Last Duel ends up focusing on, it’s sure to be a big, glorious time at the movies with Ridley in charge.

The Last Duel is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver. It will be released in the US and the UK on October 15th, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
