THE HATE U GIVE Trailer

Timely subject matter makes The Hate U Give instantly intriguing, but the depressing fact is that it was no rush job.

Based on the book of the same name, the film follows a black teen navigating the culture divide in her home town. Unfortunately, that also means confronting the way black teens are treated by the cops, and she finds herself in the worst-case scenario when her best friend is killed in front of her.

Yes, the film is centered on a hot-button topic considering the rash of high-profile deaths of black teens in the US, but the roots for the book actually date back many years. Novelist Angie Thomas initially wrote it as a short story while in college, and even then it kept expanding and expanding in an attempt to cover the intricacies of these situations. Unfortunately, this problem was not new even then, so when Thomas picked up the story again after Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Sandra Bland, the ensuing novel quickly attracted attention.

Director George Tillman Jr. (The Longest Ride) and star Amandla Stenberg (Everything, Everything) signed on for the film adaptation early, indicating that it will likely take a digestible but still jarring look at the story. The rest of the cast is stacked, so hopefully this much-needed examination will draw a sizable crowd.

The Hate U Give is directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Amandla Stenberg, K.J. Apa, and Regina Hall. It will be released in the US on October 19th, 2018 and in the UK on October 26th, 2018. For international release dates, click here.
