THE GENTLEMEN Trailer

Guy Ritchie is back to his violent silliness in The Gentlemen.

While there’s plenty of suits and well-manicured beards on display in this trailer, I’m guessing calling these guys gentlemen is pretty tongue-in-cheek. Not just because they’re engaged in some sort of drug warfare that definitely isn’t gentle, but because Ritchie likes to take the piss out of burly tough guys, showing their violent games as a bit of fun instead of something deadly serious. That seems to be the tone here, which is really more the selling point than any robust plot.

Those who enjoy Ritchie’s more typical work like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. are probably thrilled to see this as his follow up to the conspicuous Aladdin remake. It’s not that Ritchie hasn’t done commercial movies before (remember Sherlock Holmes?), but they usually maintain some of his style, which Aladdin did not. The Gentlemen feels like his essence has been purified, though, indicating the career detour was not permanent.

It also brings back to a strong (metaphorically and literally) cast, which includes Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Colin Farrell, and Michelle Dockery, to name a few. All should fit into Richie’s madcap world well, so I see no way this could disappoint his fans.

The Gentlemen is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, and Henry Golding. It will be released in the UK on January 1st, 2020 and in the US on January 24th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
