THE DRY Trailer

A man’s return home dredges up old wounds in The Dry, the latest from co-writer/director Robert Connolly.

Aaron left his hometown under suspicious circumstances. His teenage girlfriend had been murdered and a suspect was never caught, leaving many to assume he was the guilty party. Naturally, he stayed away from the town and its rumors, but the alleged murder/suicide of his former best friend draws him back. Now a member of Australia’s federal police, he becomes entwined in the new investigation, which just might clear both his friend and his own names.

Adapted from the book of the same name, this looks like a familiar blend of crime and community history in a thriller package. While this sort of thing couldn’t be considered Connolly’s bread and butter, he’s come close to this genre with 2009’s Balibo, and he’s handled numerous adaptations and kept his career going for decades now. The material should be well within his capabilities, and he’s even got a big star to hang the movie on.

Good old Eric Bana is what you might call a sturdy presence, and that’s really who you need at the center of a movie like this. He’s been turning in solid performances since his Black Hawk Down days, even if the movies around him haven’t always lived up to his work. He’s due for one that keeps up with him, and per Film Inquiry’s own review by Alex Lines (the movie already release in Australia), it does just that.

The Dry is directed by Robert Connolly and stars Eric Bana, Genevieve O’Reilly, and Keir O’Donnell. It will be released in the US on May 21st, 2021. For international release dates, click here.
