Evil converges on a small town in The Devil All the Time, the latest from co-writer/director Antonio Campos.
Nothing was the same after World War II, not on the global stage or in backwater Appalachia. The horrors crept everywhere and took many forms, from broken veterans to those taking advantage of the upheaval. These unsavory characters converge around young Arvin, who must figure out how to grow into a stable, good man while somehow keeping the only place he knows from falling apart around him.
There are ensembles and then there are Ensembles, and Devil All the Time definitely falls into the latter category. It’s hard to get a handle on precisely is going on in this trailer because it’s too busy introducing its massive cast, from Robert Pattinson’s suspiciously charismatic preacher to Jason Clarke’s skeezy photographer (I’ve taken in way too much true crime to trust a guy with a camera looking for a pretty smile). There’s also Bill Skarsgård’s haunted war vet, Sebastian Stan’s embattled sheriff, Riley Keough’s pretty waitress, and whatever the hell Haley Bennett, Eliza Scanlen, Mia Wasikowska, and Harry Melling are up to. All these folks seem to be messing up the life of Tom Holland’s Arvin, and that whirlwind of shady people seems to be the point of the movie.
Campos will have his hands full trying to keep all of this together, and while this is definitely his biggest production to date, he’s no newbie. With lots of crime thrillers under his belt, from features like Afterschool to the TV series The Sinner, this material is comfortably within his wheelhouse. Hopefully, the bulk doesn’t throw him off.
The Devil All the Time is directed by Antonio Campos and stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Riley Keough. It will be released on Netflix worldwide on September 16th, 2020.
