THE BOSS Trailer

Let the Melissa McCarthy love recommence! Audiences have been shelling out money for the former Groundling ever since Bridesmaids, and The Boss marks her last outing before the much talked about Ghostbusters reboot. If the latter is a success then McCarthy will have a franchise on her hands (if she doesn’t already have one with Spy), and her career will be stabilized for years to come.
But even if Ghostbusters falls flat, McCarthy might still manage a long, prosperous career. Movies with her mug on the poster have made over $1 billion worldwide, so there’s clearly something about her that draws people in. My guess is that audiences go to her movies simply because she’s funny, and they don’t give a crap about all the stuff that’s written about her size, age, or gender. Funny is funny, and to credit her success to anything else ignores the fact that she’s a good comedian.
Her brand of comedy is rather broad, and the trailer for The Boss makes it clear that she and writer/director Paul Feig are continuing this winning formula. Perhaps this is my age showing, but the plot of an inappropriate adult leading a Girl Scouts-esque group inevitably reminds me of Troop Beverly Hills. The difference here is that McCarthy is teaching the girls about the financial jungle in lieu of actual wilderness training. Her sidekick is the always funny Kristen Bell, who, thanks to her work on Veronica Mars, is someone I’ll forever root for.
I see no reason to think that The Boss won’t be another satisfying hit for McCarthy’s fans, but for anyone monitoring her career, this film is nothing but a placeholder until later this year when we find out just how much her star will explode.
The Boss is directed by Paul Feig and stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell. It will be released in the U.S. on April 8th, 2016 and in the U.K. on June 10th, 2016. International release dates can be found here.
