THE BIG SICK Trailer

Real life makes for a winning romantic comedy in The Big Sick, a film based on the relationship between its screenwriters Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. They’ve had more than a few bumps in the road thanks to culture clashes and an illness that put Gordon in a coma, but the pair are funny people, so their take on these serious problems are peppered with plenty of humor.
The film was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and won an audience award at South by Southwest, but perhaps most surprising reaction has been the film’s glowing critical reception. That’s unusual for romantic comedies, particularly when seen next to serious dramas like they are at festivals, but the socially conscious slant The Big Sick offers likely helped it stick out.
On top of all this intelligent fun, the film offers a drool-worthy cast led by Nanjiani himself and rom-com veteran Zoe Kazan. Holly Hunter and the ever deadpan Ray Romano look to be strong foils for Nanjiani, and somehow Aidy Bryant, Bo Burnham, and other comedians fit into the narrative.
Releasing in the heart of blockbuster season, The Big Sick looks to be a charming antidote to big-budget adventures, and even if it fails to find its way in theaters, its deal with Amazon means it will soon be available for streaming discovery.
The Big Sick is directed by Michael Showalter and stars Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan. It will be released in the U.S. on June 23rd, 2017 and in the U.K. on July 28th, 2017. For international release dates, click here.
