THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN Trailer

A beloved team comes together for The Banshees of Inisherin, the latest from writer/director Martin McDonagh.

McDonagh’s reputation may not be as bright as it once was after the controversial Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Still, it’s hard not to remember his pitch black, existential comedy peak In Bruges fondly. The feel-bad holiday film has endured in spite of its edgy comedy not holding up, but poking until you’re uncomfortable is the McDonagh brand in a nutshell.

In Bruges brought together McDonagh with stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, forming a mini who’s who of Irish cinema that comes together again for The Banshees of Inisherin. The two films are unrelated, but it will be hard not to compare to the magic the team captured nearly 15 years ago.

Farrell and Gleeson will fight again, but this time they play old friends instead of business associates. Gleeson’s Colm inexplicably decides he doesn’t want to speak to Farrell’s Pádraic again, and he’s so adamant that he threatens to take extreme measures if Pádraic doesn’t stay away. The rift threatens to split apart their small town, but neither man wants to give in to the other.

It’s a different setup, sure, but all the prickly hallmarks of what made In Bruges so lovable is here again. Maybe they’ll catch lightning in a bottle twice.

The Banshees of Inisherin is directed by Martin McDonagh and stars Colin FarrellBrendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan. It will be released in the US on October 21st, 2022. For international release dates, click here.
