THE AFTERMATH Trailer

Another sumptuous period drama starring Keira Knightley is coming your way with The Aftermath, and yes, she is going to fall in love.

The situation is more fraught than usual, though, as Knightley is following her husband (Jason Clarke) to Germany after WWII. He’s in the army and has been stationed there to help with reconstruction, and the couple find themselves tiptoeing around barely veiled hostility from the Germans. However, the real drama comes from within their own home, as the former owner of their requisitioned property strikes up a forbidden romance with Knightley.

The film sees director James Kent jump to a different time period than his previous feature, Testament of Youth, but there’s still many shared building blocks between these projects. There’s the grand, sweeping scale, which lends an old-fashioned gauziness that some people will lap up. Then there’s the wars, the examination of its effects, and the love triangles, all of which lead me to believe Kent will knock this out of the park just like he did with Testament of Youth.

While this is also a perfect match for Knightley, she’s not the only performer this film will rest on. The love triangle needed to be filled out with performers on her level, and they got that with Clarke and Alexander Skarsgård. They should form a fine trio for the drama to bounce between, leaving The Aftermath set up for success.

The Aftermath is directed by James Kent and stars Keira KnightleyAlexander Skarsgård, and Jason Clarke. It will be released in the UK on March 1st, 2019 and in the US on April 26th, 2019. For international release dates, click here.
