A composer loses herself in Tár, the latest from writer/director Todd Field.

Lydia has risen to the highest echelon of her career, working for the most prestigious symphonies in the world and racking up every award possible. That kind of success is bound to go to a person’s head, but it hits Lydia especially hard. Behavior that was once condoned in the name of genius no longer flies, and Lydia obliviously heads straight for her own downfall.

Falls from grace is hardly new to cinema, but what Field is doing incorporates the very modern scenario of explosive cancelations. The film is Field’s first since 2006’s Little Children and only his third feature of his career, but his previous films were met with such widespread acclaim that his name still carries high expectations.

One of the few things that could raise expectations, even more, is turning the prickly, complicated lead role over to Cate Blanchett, which is exactly what Field did. This seems like a character that can really push her, ad it will be exciting to see how far she’ll go with the role. Co-starring with her are Noémie Merlant and Nina Hoss.

As if all that wasn’t enough to get you excited, the film has racked up rave reviews from its festival run, so expect to hear a lot about this film as awards season develops.

Tár is directed by Todd Field and stars Cate Blanchett, Noémie Merlant, and Nina Hoss. It will be released in the US on October 7th, 2022, and in the UK on January 20th, 2023. For international release dates, click here.
