SYLVIE’S LOVE Trailer

Aspiration gets in the way of life in Sylvie’s Love, the latest from writer/director Eugene Ashe.

Sylvie has her passions, but none of them seem very practical for a Black woman in the ’50s. She knows a lot about music from her father’s record shop, and she knows a lot about TV from hours spent in front of it. The most that does, though, is make her interesting to the young men in her world, particularly to an aspiring saxophonist working at her father’s shop. But when his life takes him to Paris and beyond, she is left behind to settle down as a housewife to another man. Only later does she realize that maybe, just maybe, there are other options out there.

This is promoting itself as a sweeping love story with a feminist twist, her options seemingly tied the man who wants her at home and the man who wants her to have it all. This sort of straightforward storytelling seems to be the mode Ashe is comfortable with, having previously done the romantic dramedy Homecoming. This film looks to have a much bigger scope than that one, though, so hopefully, they can amplify the aesthetics to match.

Tessa Thompson as the titular Sylvie will likely be the big draw here, and deservedly so thanks to the wide range of roles under her belt. Nnamdi Asomugha co-stars as the saxophonist (and probably the one she should end up with).

If all goes well, this should be a nice treat for the holiday season.

Sylvie’s Love is directed by Eugene Ashe and stars Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha. It will be released worldwide on Amazon Prime on December 23rd, 2020.
