A vacation is more than a vacation in Supernova, the latest from writer/director Harry Macqueen.
Sam and Tusker have loaded up their RV for a tour of beloved friends and family spread across England. It would be a low-key trip, except it’s also a goodbye of sorts as Tusker has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia. In that context, the trip feels like a preview of the rest of the couple’s lives together: average moments that are anything but average because they may never share them again.
We’ve seen plenty of dramas about this kind of rough end to life and we’re getting more and more dramas about queer relationships, but it’s rare to see a combination of the two, which essentially place a queer relationship in a story about much more than queerness. It’s a step many have begged for, and this kind of thoughtful, melancholy story should be comfortable for Macqueen to handle. His previous feature, Hinterland, was a similarly quiet look at old friends.
As if that’s not enough to get you interested, the main couple is also played by Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci, two actors most people will watch doing just about anything. Seeing the two of them play off each other with such meaty material should make this movie a treat, even if it is seasoned with tears.
Supernova is directed by Harry Macqueen and stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. It will be released in the UK on November 27th, 2020. For international release dates, click here.
