Romance is in the air in Summer Night, the directorial debut of Joseph Cross.

With time stretching out in front of you, young adulthood can be an aimless, paralyzing time. Your choices are many, but the allure of what is familiar and comfortable can form a morass that’s difficult to extricate yourself from. This is the quagmire the characters in Summer Night find themselves in, spending their time falling in and out of love, taking for granted longstanding relationships, and avoiding the responsibilities looming over them.

You probably know Cross as an actor, having appeared in such films as Lincoln and Milk. He’s making the jump to directing here, taking the leap to a feature with no previous experience. This will be a big test for him as films about aimlessness can get a bit, well, aimless, and the fact that he’s working with a script from first-time writer Jordan Jolliff won’t ease concerns.

As per usual, though, the actor-turned-director has assembled a solid cast of actors, with Boyhood‘s Ellar Coltrane and romance movie vets Analeigh Tipton and Lana Condor all headlining. Even the expansive ensemble is pulling from people with lots of TV and movie credits, with Justin ChatwinVictoria Justice, and Ian Nelson also starring. They should provide stability to a project with some inexperienced leaders.

Summer Night is directed by Joseph Cross and stars Analeigh Tipton, Bill Milner, and Lana Condor. It will be released in the US on July 12th, 2019. Further release dates are not currently known.
